Urban Scrawl is a one-night only art exhibition dedicated to art graffiti and public murals documented in and around the city of Milwaukee. This unique event will feature photography by the Milwaukee Guerilla Artists and will include live on-site graffiti demos by local professional artists specializing in this medium. The show will be curated and presented by the Why Not Gallery, an online space dedicated to the exploration of alternative and non- traditional art forms.
The impetus of this show is to recognize the aesthetic validity of an underground art form that is quickly gaining acknowledgment in the fine art world. In recent years, a number of books have been published to increase public appreciation for this medium and exhibitions dedicated to graffiti artists have taken place in urban cultural centers around the world, such as the internationally respected Tate Museum in London and the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York.
It is important to state that the intent of this show is not to promote gang activity or vandalism of private property that many associate with graffiti, but rather to recognize the artistic potential behind this often misunderstood art form. While some of the photos in this exhibit show graffiti in hidden or decaying, albeit public, places other photos feature prominent public displays commissioned or even created by the property's owner. While recognizing that the topic of graffiti art in the city of Milwaukee is a controversial one, the Why Not Gallery promotes a responsible outlet for artistic expression that ultimately leads to the beautification and improvement of our community as a whole.
Urban Scrawl is free and open to the public. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. For more information, contact Jennifer at the Why Not Gallery, (414) 460-7259 or by email at info@whynotgallery.com.
